In his introduction, Saunders writes, “We’re going to enter seven fastidiously constructed scale models of the world, made for a specific purpose that our time maybe doesn’t fully endorse but that these writers accepted implicitly as the aim of art-namely, to ask the big questions, questions like, How are we supposed to be living down here? What were we put here to accomplish? What should we value? What is truth, anyway, and how might we recognize it?” He approaches the stories technically yet accessibly, and through them explains how narrative functions why we stay immersed in a story and why we resist it and the bedrock virtues a writer must foster. Paired with iconic short stories by Chekhov, Turgenev, Tolstoy, and Gogol, the seven essays in this book are intended for anyone interested in how fiction works and why it’s more relevant than ever in these turbulent times. In A Swim in a Pond in the Rain, he shares a version of that class with us, offering some of what he and his students have discovered together over the years. For the last twenty years, George Saunders has been teaching a class on the Russian short story to his MFA students at Syracuse University.

The only con would be at times, the dialogue between the characters did not flow flawlessly, it felt somewhat awkward, not a huge con, this was still a good book that I enjoyed reading. The author’s writing style kept me engaged. The characters were created in a way that made you feel like you were there, there was also character growth throughout the story. I loved how the author not only did the queer romance eloquently but also tacked the societal issue of women making a decision to not have children, our society has taught us that women must have children, so to see it in a different light was amazing. The insta-love trope was great, I know a lot of people do not like that type of trope, but it does not bother me. The characters struggled with the cheating and it showed the other side of it, which I could appreciate. While the cheating trope is not my favorite, there are times that it does not bother me. My Thoughts: This is a sapphic romance novel. I requested a digital advanced readers copy from Creative James Media and Laura May and providing my opinion voluntarily and unbiased. Born in the German town of Dorsten, Cornelia initially worked as an illustrator but soon began writing her own stories. Cornelia Funke is the New York Times bestselling author of the Inkheart trilogy and a whole host of popular childrens novels and picture books. Now he and his friend Ella must uncover a centuries-old murder, all while haunted by terrifying spirits. I lay awake, wondering once again who would be the first to give in: my mother, because she'd finally realize that her only son was far more important than a bearded dentist, or me, because I'd get tired of my leaden heart and beg her to let me come home. Jon didnt expect to be confronted by a pack of vengeful ghosts at his new boarding school. Angus was humming in his sleep, some tune he was practizing for the choir. It was on my sixth night that I realized homesickness was going to be the least of my worries. Publisher Little Brown Books for Young Readers. By the end, Wicker feels subtly changed, and she offers no answers as to why that might be or how long it may last. She also weaves in stories of trickery, giving the tales of otherworldliness a nicely earthbound counterpoint. Some of the tales are sad ones, but Wicker's jaunty pacing and humor keep the work from growing too dark and leave the reader with a feeling of tenderness, rather than pity, toward her subjects. She explores these areas through the stories of those who visit Lily Dale annually, craving a few insightful words about deceased family members or hoping for a premonition about romances, careers or children. Although the book details the town's story, Wicker uses its history merely as a framework to explore more slippery topics, e.g., the nature of faith, the value of belief and the need for solace. The result is a portrait not just of an upstate New York town built 122 years ago on old-fashioned spirituality, but also of the mediums who practice there, their clients, and Wicker herself, who lets details of her own spiritual beliefs lightly shade her travels to Lily Dale. But Wicker, a Dallas Morning News religion reporter, resists her own skepticism just as Lily Dale's citizens resist letting the movement die. Since it's become nearly extinguished, the American Spiritualism movement seems more ripe for sociological study and amused incredulity than a topic for deep reflection or journalistic memoir. On the Montezuma Strip in a dark future not that far away, such things are common.
